The Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours
Learn all about Hitler’s Headquarters Compound, the Berghof and the famous Eagle’s Nest
Tour Description
Hitler’s Headquarters Compound
Your guide will take you on a driving tour with our contract tour bus and driver around Obersalzberg, a small mountain community above Berchtesgaden. Here the history of the area’s takeover by the National Socialist Party and the transformation of the mountain into Hitler’s Southern Headquarters will be recounted. Numerous original buildings or sites where structures once stood will be pointed out and explained with the help of photographs.
The Berghof: Hitler’s home and HQS
On the driving tour of Hitler’s former alpine compound, you will stop to visit the historically significant site of Hitler’s former home (now a ruin). Known as the “Berghof” the sprawling structure, once famed for its extensive terrace, is located on a promontory on the flank of the Obersalzberg mountain far below the more-famed “Eagle’s Nest.” Hitler’s 30-room Berghof estate became the venue for national and international political decision-making, a place visited by foreign heads of state and frequented by Nazi leaders, as well as by members of European high society who were often hosted by the “lady of the house”, Eva Braun.
Eagle’s Nest
You will then board a specially equipped mountain bus for a breathtaking drive up the 6.5 km (4 mile) road with its 27% incline to a high mountain parking lot, just below the Eagle’s Nest. The original brass-lined elevator will then transport you up through the heart of Kehlstein mountain straight into the building itself. After an in-depth tour of the Eagle’s Nest (now a restaurant) you’ll have some free time to enjoy the views and refreshments.

General Information Public Eagles Nest Historical Tour
The Eagle’s Nest Public Tour is offered Sunday through Thursday at 1:00 p.m., departing from our meeting point Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours, located next to Berggasthof Obersalzberg on Parking 1 (Salzbergstrasse 43) between the restaurant and the metal stairs. It operates when the Eagle’s Nest is open, (approx. mid-May till mid-October, 2026) and lasts till about 5:00 p.m.
The price of the tour in 2026 is € 85 per person and € 60 for children from 8 through 14 years of age (due to the intense historical focus of this tour we do not accept bookings for children under 8). The price includes the comprehensive guiding and transportation (3 bus journeys + 2 elevator rides). As our group tours are limited in size, it is advisable to book in advance.
Note: As an alternative, our exclusive Private Tours are offered daily on request, depending on the availability of our accredited guides.
How much walking is involved?
– Walk through tunnel (406 ft / 124 m) for elevator ride into the Eagle’s Nest
– Tour of building (about 20 steps)
Limited Mobility and Wheelchair Access
Those with limited mobility may prefer to book a Private Tour with us where we can tailor the program to a slower pace and reduce the number of stairs if need be.
Unfortunately, the public half-day Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour is not possible with a wheelchair because:
The local coach company that we contract for our tours has no wheelchair ramps in their buses and our tour participants need to climb up the 3 or 4 steps to get into the bus.
The Eagle’s Nest mountain buses have wheelchair ramps, however up at the Eagle’s Nest our tour participants need to go down two different flights of stairs to get into the main rooms of the building and climb back up them as well.
Children
Is this tour suitable for children? Do I have to take a tour to visit the Eagle’s Nest?
We are sorry that we no longer accept children under 8 years old on the group tours. An alternative would be to either book a Private Tour with us or visit the sites on your own. You simply take the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus from the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point (address: Salzbergstr. 41 Berchtesgaden Germany). Buses depart every 25 minutes and you do not require advance reservation.

The price of the tour in 2026 is € 425 exclusively for your private party of up to 4 participants. From 5 to 8 participants the group price is € 475. The price includes our transportation around Obersalzberg and the half-day of expert guiding by an English native-speaker but does not include the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus (about € 34 per person which is to be paid by the client directly to the Eagle’s Nest bus ticket office in person). Note: please do not purchase the Eagle’s Nest bus tickets online. When you book our private tour we immediately reserve the round-trip Eagle’s Nest bus journey.
The meeting point is Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours, located next to Berggasthof Obersalzberg on Parking 1 (Salzbergstrasse 43) between the restaurant and the metal stairs.
The tour is offered on request and depending on our accredited guides’ availability, when the Eagle’s Nest is open, (usually from mid-May through October, weather permitting) and lasts approximately 4 hours.
Note: As an alternative to the Private Tours, our Eagle’s Nest Public Tour is offered daily at 1:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
Children
Due to the intense historical focus of this tour we do not recommend booking this tour with children under 8 years of age. We, as parents, find that the four-hour history-intensive tour that we offer is tough on a young child’s patience. The Eagle’s Nest can also be visited without our guided tour (see below).
How much walking is involved?
– Walk through tunnel (406 ft / 124m) for elevator ride into the Eagle’s Nest
– Tour of building (about 20 stairs)

You tailor your experience of Hitler’s former HQs
This quality tour offers you a 4-in one opportunity to visit four various sites, depending on how much time you have. You can either join us exclusively for the tour of the iconic Eagle’s Nest or, if you have enough time, you can elect to add on a visit to the bunkers, the history center and / or the ruins of Hitler’s home at no extra cost.
Eagle’s Nest (2,5 hours fully guided)
Our guided tour starts at our office located in a preserved section of Hitler’s former Alpine compound. Here our experienced native English speaking guides introduce you to the 3rd Reich history of Hitler’s one-time HQs, with the support of photographs. We then skip the line to board a special mountain bus for the impressive ride up to the world-famous Eagle’s Nest.
After a ride in the original brass-lined elevator that climbs through the core of the mountain, our expert guide will reveal the behind-the-scenes story of the construction and use of this world-famous building, once referred to as Hitler’s Alpine Fortress. Following the tour, you are on your own for free time to explore further and, possibly, enjoy refreshments at the Eagle’s Nest.

Upon your individual return to the starting point, you have the opportunity to visit the highly informative history center and / or underground bunkers (the entrance and audio guide are included in the Eagle’s Nest ticket price.)
Ruins of Hitler’s home (on your own)
After the visit to the bunker and center, if your personal schedule permits, you could take the short downhill walk from there to the ruins of Hitler’s former home and seat of power, the so-called Berghof. Our guide will have previously covered the history and shown you photos of the site at the beginning of the guided portion of the tour.
